2017 Bridge Scholarship Recipient

I am so humbled to be named the 2017 Bridge Foundation Scholarship recipient and have more financial freedom upon graduating from college. The entire team of Bridge Foundation members was so receptive to my plans for my life, and I know will continue to cheer for me as I achieve those dreams!

Currently, I am a student at Duke University, thinking about majoring in Environmental Science but most certainly pursuing a pre-med track. I graduated from Myers Park High School and was involved in many engagements throughout my high school years. I started a club called Beds for Kids (BFK) Club at Myers Park that is partnered with the local Charlotte nonprofit Beds for Kids. Beds for Kids helps furnish families’ homes in the greater Charlotte area who are transitioning out of homelessness or going through hard times. The BFK club volunteered regularly at the nonprofit’s warehouse and our members are shining examples of being lights in their community. I was also a member of the field hockey team at Myers Park and played on Varsity for three years (State Champs 2016! Woo!). I served as a member of the yearbook staff and editor of the sports section, volunteered at my church teaching a Sunday School Class for six years, and was involved in the leadership for the IB leadership institute – which works to develop leadership skills in IB program juniors.

Academics are something that I value which is why I spent all my years at Myers Park in the IB program. I was even blessed to receive my IB diploma with 36 out of the 24 points needed to obtain the diploma.

As for my plans at Duke, I want to become involved in research, volunteer work around Durham, and help at the Duke campus farm. I plan to become a doctor who values preventative medicine above all else by integrating lifestyle changes into the lives of my patients. The ability of a whole foods plant-based diet to prevent and reverse disease is inspiring and something I aim to raise awareness of in my medical practice. I encourage everyone to watch the documentaries Forks over Knives and What the Health (both on Netflix) to learn more about the transformative power of proper nutrition!

Once again I would like to thank the Bridge Foundation for this opportunity, I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
